Za poslední půl rok můj jednoznačně nejoblíbenější autor. Narozen 1931 v USA, vystudoval politologii na University of California v Berkeley. Jeho doktorská práce Peasant Nationalism and Communist Power o radikalizaci rolníků díky brutální japonské okupaci částí Číny byla průlomová (a mimo jiné přitáhla pozornost CIA, pro kterou pak několik let pracoval jako konzultant), podobně jako jeho pozdější MITI and the Japanese Miracle o historii a klíčové roli Ministerstva mezinárodního obchodu průmyslu pro japonský ekonomický růst v období po druhé světové válce. Po ukončení kariéry universitního profesora v roce 1992 se zapsal do širšího povědomí trilogií knih věnovaných americkému militarismu a imperialismu Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire, The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic, a Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic. Zatím jsem přečetl první dvě a nemůžu než doporučit. Podle rychlé kontroly na Seznamu nebyla žádná jeho kniha přeložena do češtiny, tak vám nezbude než sáhnout po originále. S několika zajímavými myšlenkami z výše zmíněných knih vás seznámím příště, teď bych chtěl ocitovat část článku Imperialist propaganda (komentář k filmu Soukromá válka pana Wilsona / Charlie Wilson's War, úvodní citát je ze stejného článku), o tom kdy začala americká podpora pro mudžahedíny:

"For the CIA legally to carry out a covert action, the president must sign off on -- that is, authorize -- a document called a 'finding.' Crile repeatedly says that President Carter signed such a finding ordering the CIA to provide covert backing to the mujahideen after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on December 24, 1979. The truth of the matter is that Carter signed the finding on July 3, 1979, six months before the Soviet invasion, and he did so on the advice of his national security adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, in order to try to provoke a Russian incursion. Brzezinski has confirmed this sequence of events in an interview with a French newspaper, and former CIA Director [today Secretary of Defense] Robert Gates says so explicitly in his 1996 memoirs. It may surprise Charlie Wilson to learn that his heroic mujahideen were manipulated by Washington like so much cannon fodder in order to give the USSR its own Vietnam. The mujahideen did the job but as subsequent events have made clear, they may not be all that grateful to the United States."
